La Famille Gaunt est issue d’une très vieille lignée de sorciers Sang-Purs, les derniers héritiers de Salazar Serpentard, l’un des fondateurs de Poudlard. Si elle fut une très riche famille, dans les années 1920, ses membres étaient surtout connus pour leur instabilité et leur goût prononcé pour la violence. Bob Ogden, chef du département de police du Ministère de la magie, se rend chez Elvis Gaunt, avec une assignation à comparaître pour son fils, Morfin. Ce dernier a jeté un sortilège sur un Moldu la nuit précédente. Il fait alors la rencontre d’une jeune femme, Merope Gaunt, qui observe depuis sa fenêtre un Moldu du nom de Tom Jedusor Senior. Bob ne le sait pas encore, mais l’événement qui va se produire sera déterminant dans la naissance de Lord Voldemort, le plus grand Seigneur des Ténèbres de tous les temps...
