Originaires du Montana, les frères Phil et George Burbank sont diamétralement opposés. Autant Phil est raffiné, brillant et cruel – autant George est flegmatique, méticuleux et bienveillant. À eux deux, ils sont à la tête du plus gros ranch de la vallée du Montana. Une région, loin de la modernité galopante du XXème siècle, où les hommes assument toujours leur virilité et où l'on vénère la figure de Bronco Henry, le plus grand cow-boy que Phil ait jamais rencontré.
